NSC’s Renewed Support Behind Team Nigeria’s Para Grand Prix Triumph – PCN President

The President of the Para-Olympics Committee of Nigeria (PCN), Sunday Odebode, has attributed Team Nigeria’s remarkable performance at the recent Para Grand Prix in Tunisia to the strategic and intentional support provided by the National Sports Commission (NSC).

Team Nigeria delivered a stellar showing at the international event, finishing second overall among 42 participating nations, with a total haul of 19 medals—10 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze.

Odebode, while speaking on the team’s outing, praised the leadership of the NSC, particularly its Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, for the commission’s proactive involvement in the growth and development of para-sports in the country.

> “We have never had it this good in the past,” Odebode stated. “The NSC is not only supporting us financially but also providing the technical assistance needed to excel in both local and international competitions.”

The team’s success in Tunisia has also secured Nigeria qualification slots for the World Championships in India later this year, as well as upcoming events at the Commonwealth Games and the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games.

Odebode further highlighted that the smooth execution of programs such as training camps, trials, and international participation owes much to the NSC’s reformed funding strategy.

> “The Para-lifters just concluded their national trials where we discovered 10 new athletes. They are now set to represent Nigeria at a world tournament in Santiago, Chile,” he revealed.

He added that multiple para-sport disciplines—including wheelchair basketball and para-swimming—are preparing for international duties, aided by the Commission’s financial backing.

The PCN President concluded by calling on the athletes to remain focused and continue justifying the support being provided, emphasizing that “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

Team Nigeria’s strong showing in Tunisia is being seen not just as a sporting triumph, but as a testament to what sustained investment and inclusive sports development can achieve on the global stage.
