NSC Hails Team Nigeria’s Rising Aquatics Stars After Historic Africa Championships Breakthrough In Algeria

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has applauded the Nigeria Aquatics Federation and Team Nigeria athletes following an impressive outing at the 17th Africa Aquatics Championships held in Oran, Algeria, from May 5–10, 2026.

Team Nigeria returned home with three bronze medals alongside a series of standout performances that have drawn continental recognition and reinforced growing optimism around the future of aquatics sports in the country.

Leading the praise was the Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, who described the performances as another major signal that Nigerian sports is steadily expanding beyond traditional disciplines.

“This performance is another strong indication that Nigerian sports is on the rise across different disciplines,” Olopade stated.
“We are proud of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation, the athletes, coaches, and every stakeholder who contributed to this achievement in Algeria.”

Beyond the medal haul, the championships also brought wider recognition for Nigeria’s rapid development in swimming and aquatic sports, with the country reportedly earning acknowledgment as one of the fastest-developing nations in African aquatics.

For the NSC, the significance of the achievement goes beyond podium finishes alone.

“Winning medals is commendable, but receiving recognition for development and growth at the continental level is equally important. It shows that the structure, investment, and commitment to the sport are beginning to produce visible results,” Olopade added.

The performance in Algeria is being seen as another boost to the Commission’s broader sports development agenda, which has focused heavily on grassroots expansion, athlete support, and federation restructuring across multiple sports.

Stakeholders within the aquatics community also believe the latest success could help attract greater investment, sponsorship, and youth participation into swimming and related disciplines nationwide.

In recent years, Nigeria has steadily increased its visibility in continental and international aquatics competitions, with emerging athletes beginning to challenge established African powers.

And after another encouraging showing in Algeria, the message from Team Nigeria is becoming clearer:

Nigeria’s aquatics revolution may only just be getting started.
