NPFL Youth Team Begins Ogun State Camp with Thrilling Win, Eyes Final Squad Selection

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Youth Team has officially kicked off its two-week training camp in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with a statement victory in a closed-door friendly match against Amazing Boys FC, triumphing 5-3 in a high-octane encounter.

The camp, which runs from October 4 to 17, follows the successful conclusion of the 2024/2025 NPFL Youth Championship held across three zones— Ikenne, Isiala-Ngwa, and Kano. A total of 70 standout players were scouted from the tournament, and are currently undergoing intensive training and assessment in Abeokuta.

Head coach Eugene Agagbe, who oversaw the team’s opening win, described the performance as “encouraging,” while maintaining that there is still room for development. “The boys showed hunger and flair, which is what we’re looking for. But we also know this is a process. We’re not there yet,” Agagbe said in a post-match interview.

The camp is being spearheaded by NPFL Youth League Director, Dominic Iorfa, in collaboration with 1 Nil Sports Management, and is aimed at grooming elite youth talents capable of feeding into the senior league and national teams. From the 70 players in camp, only 20 will be selected to form the official NPFL Youth Team.

The team will return to action tomorrow at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta for another friendly match, part of ongoing efforts to assess player development and identify exceptional talents.

The NPFL Youth Team initiative marks a renewed focus on grassroots talent development in Nigerian football, with hopes of shaping the next generation of stars for both domestic and international football stages.
