NPFL Slams Remo Stars with ₦7m Fine, Orders Relocation of Home Matches After Ikorodu City Clash

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has imposed a ₦7 million fine on defending champions Remo Stars for multiple breaches of league regulations following crowd disturbances during their Matchday 20 fixture against Ikorodu City on January 14, 2026.

In a statement issued by the league, Remo Stars were found guilty of violating several provisions of the NPFL Framework and Rules, particularly relating to matchday security, crowd control, and supporter conduct at their Ikenne home ground.

According to the NPFL, the club failed to provide adequate and effective security, which resulted in a brawl between supporters of both teams, leading to injuries among away fans and damage to vehicles, including the Ikorodu City team bus.

The league further stated that Remo Stars did not ensure the proper conduct of their supporters, who allegedly harassed and intimidated match officials during the encounter. Objects were also thrown onto the pitch by home supporters, causing multiple stoppages during the match.

In a more severe charge, the NPFL noted that Remo Stars fans displayed conduct capable of bringing the game into disrepute by bringing dangerous objects and weapons into the stadium.

A breakdown of the sanctions shows that the club was fined ₦2 million for failure to provide adequate security, ₦1 million for throwing objects onto the field of play, ₦1 million for improper conduct of supporters, and another ₦1 million for misconduct capable of bringing the league into disrepute. An additional ₦2 million was imposed as compensatory cost for damages to the away team’s property and injuries sustained by their supporters.

Beyond the financial penalties, the NPFL ordered Remo Stars to relocate their remaining home matches in the 2025/2026 season to the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, citing safety concerns at the club’s Ikenne venue.

The league also confirmed that Remo Stars have 48 hours from the date of notification to formally appeal the sanctions, in line with NPFL disciplinary procedures.

The decision underscores the NPFL’s renewed stance on zero tolerance for crowd violence and poor matchday management, as the league intensifies efforts to improve safety, officiating standards, and the overall image of Nigerian football.
