NPFL Cracks Down on Katsina United, Slams Club With ₦2 Million Fine Over Security Breaches Against Plateau United

Katsina United have been hit with a ₦2 million fine by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following security breaches and crowd disturbances during their league encounter against Plateau United on Sunday.

Sports247 reports that the sanctions follow allegations that the Katsina-based club failed to provide adequate and effective security arrangements during the fixture, allowing unauthorised individuals to gain access to restricted areas of the stadium.

According to the NPFL disciplinary notice, the club’s failure to maintain proper security resulted in violations of the league’s Framework and Rules governing matchday operations, crowd management and the protection of players and match officials.

The league organisers imposed a ₦1 million fine on Katsina United for failing to provide adequate and effective security throughout the encounter.

An additional ₦1 million fine was handed down after supporters of the home side reportedly encroached onto the field of play, creating an unsafe environment for players, match officials and other accredited personnel.

The development brings the total financial penalties imposed on Katsina United to ₦2 million. The NPFL maintained that the incidents constituted breaches of its established regulations designed to guarantee the safety of participants and preserve order at league venues.

The disciplinary action highlights growing concerns surrounding crowd control, stadium security and spectator conduct in Nigerian domestic football.

Under the league’s operational requirements, host clubs are responsible for implementing effective security measures to prevent unauthorised access to restricted areas and ensure that supporters remain within designated sections of the stadium.

Failure to enforce these measures can expose players, match officials and other stakeholders to potential safety risks while undermining the integrity of league fixtures.

The latest sanctions reinforce the responsibility placed on participating clubs to maintain acceptable matchday security standards.

Despite the financial penalties, Katsina United retain the right to challenge the disciplinary decision. The NPFL has granted the club 48 hours, equivalent to two working days from the date of notification, to submit an appeal against the sanctions.

The club must therefore decide whether to accept the punishment or formally contest the charges through the league’s established disciplinary procedures. No additional sanctions were specified in the disciplinary information released.

The punishment serves as another reminder of the league’s commitment to enforcing regulations aimed at improving safety and professionalism across Nigerian football.

With the 2026/2027 NPFL campaign underway, clubs are expected to strengthen security arrangements, improve crowd management and ensure strict compliance with matchday protocols.

For Katsina United, the immediate challenge is addressing the identified security lapses while determining their next course of action regarding the ₦2 million fine.

The latest development sends a clear warning to other NPFL clubs that inadequate stadium security and supporters’ misconduct can attract significant disciplinary consequences.
