NPFL 22: Remo Stars, Gombe United, Shooting Stars and Niger Tornadoes Break Top Flight Division Nine-Year Old Record

History has once again repeated itself as all the four new promoted clubs will be staying in the top flight division for another season without going down into division two for the first time since the 2012/2013 campaign.

The 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League(NPFL) came to conclusion on Sunday, July 18, 2022 which saw Rivers United winning the league for the first time in their history, the club that was formed by the merger of Sharks F.C. and Dolphins F.C. in 2016.

Several unprofessional conducts by supporters and fans of Kano Pillars sent the four-time league winners on a path to relegation to the Nigeria National League(NNL) for the first, the season also saw the relegation of MFM FC after four years in the top flight league.

Katsina United and Heartland F.C of Owerri couldn’t escape the relegation storms as both clubs were sent to wallow in the division two of club football pyramid.

However, history repeated itself once one in the just concluded season as all the teams promoted from NNL to NPFL for the 2021/2022 season all escaped relegation for the time in nine year. The feat was last achieved in the 2012/2013 season of the NPFL.

Gombe United, Shooting Stars, Niger Tornadoes and most notably Remo Stars, the club that defied every odds to secure a continental ticket for the first time in the club’s history.

The club underwent several restructuring in the past year, and quickly turned itself into a club to be reckoned with, and will join the Champions Rivers United and Plateau United as the country’s representatives at continental stages next season.

Despite some violence and controversial moments that marred some encounters in the just concluded season, many football lovers still opined that the campaign was a successful one and expressed optimism that things will only get better from here going forward.
