Inter Lagos interim head coach Olusanjo Olutayo has delivered a strong assessment of his team’s performance following their 2-0 home defeat to Nasarawa United, warning that their inability to convert goalscoring opportunities represents relegation form in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
Sports247 reports that Olutayo, who assumed temporary responsibility following the resignation of head coach Giwa Shakiru, expressed disappointment with his players’ tactical application, discipline and overall approach during the Matchday 9 encounter.
Speaking during his post-match interview, the coach identified defensive weaknesses and poor decision-making as major factors behind the defeat.
‘Our First-Half Performance Was Very Disappointing’
Olutayo was particularly critical of his team’s display before the interval, insisting that the players failed to demonstrate the required tactical awareness and character.
“The first half was very disappointing in terms of application, principles and character,” he said.
The interim coach explained that certain weaknesses had been anticipated but were not adequately addressed during the match.
“Certain behaviours, efforts and reactions to situations were not there. Our midfield was very open and wasn’t supporting the backline, and that cost the team.”
His assessment highlighted the lack of defensive protection from midfield, which allowed Nasarawa United to exploit spaces and establish control. Despite the disappointing opening period, Olutayo acknowledged an improved performance after making tactical adjustments and substitutions.
“We made changes in the second half with some substitutions, and we had more of the ball in good areas,” he explained.
The changes helped Inter Lagos enjoy greater possession in promising positions, but the team remained unable to find a breakthrough.
For Olutayo, the improved second-half display was insufficient to compensate for the mistakes made earlier in the encounter.
‘That’s Relegation Form’
The coach reserved his strongest criticism for the team’s lack of efficiency in front of goal.
“We don’t need to have 15 chances with zero goals. That’s relegation form. Core details are missing, and that has to change,” he warned.
His remarks underline the urgency facing Inter Lagos as they attempt to reverse their disappointing start to life in the NPFL.
With just one victory from nine league matches, the newly promoted side face increasing pressure to improve results and move away from the relegation zone.
For Olutayo, the message is clear: possession and goalscoring opportunities mean little without execution, and Inter Lagos must urgently address their tactical shortcomings and finishing if they are to compete effectively in the topflight.
