All is set for the Northwest Badminton Championship scheduled to hold from January 29 to 31 at the Noble Badminton Club (FEUZ), Zaria, Kaduna State, as top players from across the zone converge for three days of intense competition.

The championship, sponsored by leading fertilizer company MATRIX, will feature 13 competitive events cutting across age-grade, senior and veteran categories, underscoring efforts to deepen grassroots development and broaden participation in the sport.
Events lined up for the tournament include U-12 boys singles and doubles; U-15 boys singles and doubles; U-15 girls singles and doubles; active male singles and doubles; active female singles and doubles; mixed doubles; under-49 category; and the over-50 years plus category.
No fewer than 50 badminton clubs from the Northwest zone—comprising Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Jigawa, Zamfara, Sokoto and host state Kaduna—are expected to participate, promising keen rivalry and high-level competition.
Speaking ahead of the championship, the organiser and Chairman of the Kaduna State Badminton Association, Dr. Mohammad Maina, who is also the Northwest Zonal Representative and Vice President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, expressed confidence that the tournament would uncover new talents and elevate the standard of badminton in the region.
Dr. Maina disclosed that certificates, awards and prizes would be presented to outstanding players and participating clubs, noting that the event was designed not only to reward excellence but also to encourage wider participation and sustained interest in the sport.
He commended MATRIX Fertilizer Company for its support, describing the sponsorship as a boost to badminton development at the zonal level.
Several dignitaries are expected to grace the championship, which promises to be a major sporting highlight in the Northwest, as emerging and experienced players slug it out for supremacy and recognition.
