North-West U-17 Volleyball Championship: National female coach says competition is an eye-opener

The national female volleyball coach, Rakiyyah Mohammad, on Saturday described the ongoing Under-17 North-West Zonal Volleyball Competition in Birnin-Kebbi as an eye-opener for both female and male teams in the zone.

Mohammad told newsmen in Birnin-Kebbi that the competition had successfully united sportsmen and women in the zone.

The competition was organised by the North-West Zonal Office of the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development.

“I have observed with great zeal the teams participating in the competition. The players are displaying good skills, energy and spirit of sportsmanship.

“I am happy and satisfied, especially with the performance of female teams.

“But this is an eye-opener for us, in spite of their different religious and ethnic backgrounds, they have come together as teams and play together,” she said.

The national coach, however, urged the private sector and individuals to support the game at the grassroots.

“Government alone can not fund sports, so there is need for private sector and individual to come and contribute to grassroots sports development,” Mohammed said.
