NOC Steps Up Efforts Towards Promoting Safe Sporting Environments Across Nigeria

Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC is stepping up its efforts at promoting safe, inclusive and respectful sporting environments across the country, as the officials key into guidelines stipulated by the global governing body.

Sports247 reports that, towards aligning with regulations outlined by International Olympic Committee (IOC), the NOC is set to formally launch Nigeria’s version of the global safeguarding policy with a document on June 16th.

This was made known by NOC’s public relations officer, Tony Nezianya, who disclosed in a press release that the launch will take place at the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) secretariat in Abuja.

He disclosed that the launch, which will mark a significant milestone for safety in Nigerian events and activities, as directed by the IOC’s Safe Sport Initiative, which is aimed at ensuring an inclusive and empowering environment for all.

The media officer further disclosed that the NOC earlier inaugurated its Safeguard Commission in February 2025, following which the body has undertaken a series of advocacy, awareness and sensitising activities to boost safe sporting environments in Nigeria.

Nezianya added, “As part of these efforts, the Commission utilised the 22nd National Sports Festival, held in Abeokuta from May 15 to 30, 2025, as a platform to advance awareness of Safe Sport through sensitisation campaigns.

“(This was done through) stakeholder engagement, and the dissemination of educational materials. Following extensive consultations and, in line with international best practices, the Commission developed the NOC Safeguard Policy for Sports in Nigeria.

“The Policy has established clear standards, reporting pathways and accountability mechanisms designed to protect athletes, coaches, officials, children, women and other vulnerable persons from abuse.”

Sports247 gathered further that the policy will also guide against issues of exploitation, harassment, bullying, discrimination, neglect, and all forms of misconduct within the sporting environment.
