The gathering, which took place on Monday and Tuesday in Abuja, was staged under the aegis of the Olympic Solidarity programme, under guidance of the lead facilitator, Dr. Donald Rukare, a MEMOS instructor in governance and sports management.
While Rukare, who is also the president of Commonwealth Sport, took the participants through the basics, Gumel stressed in his key note speech that good governance and accountability are vital to moving Nigerian sports forward.
NOC’s public relations officer, Tony Nezianya added, “The initiative supports the Basic Universal Principles of Good Governance within the Olympic Movement, which emphasize a clear vision and strategy.
“(It also backs) sound organizational structures and regulations, integrity, ethics, transparency, accountability, and effective control mechanisms. The NOC considers good governance essential to the credibility, sustainability, and growth of sports organizations.
“As NOC affiliates, National Federations have a vital responsibility to maintain effective governance systems and operate in accordance with their constitutions, applicable regulations, and recognized ethical standards.”
