Engr. Musa Kida, Board Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for removing long-standing bottlenecks in Nigeria’s sports ecosystem, describing the renewed policy direction as a catalyst for confidence and growth.
Kida highlighted that the President’s interventions have repositioned the sector for efficiency, transparency, and increased private sector participation.
“Mr. President’s commitment to reforming the sports ecosystem has created the enabling environment necessary for sustainable development.
When governance structures are strengthened and bureaucracy is streamlined, progress becomes inevitable,” he said.
He called on corporate organizations and concerned Nigerians to support the federal government’s vision through strategic investments in sports development, emphasizing that public-private partnerships are essential to unlocking Nigeria’s sporting potential.
NNPC, Kida noted, has already begun proactive initiatives to support sports growth, reflecting its broader commitment to national development beyond the energy sector.
Kida reaffirmed his personal dedication to advancing the National Institute for Sports (NIS), the country’s premier sports training and research institution.
He recalled his role as Chairman of the Committee that produced a comprehensive 10-Year Development Plan for NIS, a roadmap widely regarded as transformative for positioning the institute as a center of excellence in Africa and beyond.
Under the leadership of Director General Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu, the NIS has been pursuing institutional reforms to restore its core mandate, including elite athlete training, coaching education, sports science development, and technical capacity building.
Kida described the 10-year framework as “a strategic instrument designed not just to revive the Institute, but to align it with global best practices in sports education, innovation, and high-performance systems.”
With renewed national focus on sports as a tool for youth empowerment, economic growth, and international recognition, Kida stressed that sustained collaboration between government, institutions, and the private sector will be crucial in translating policy reforms into tangible podium successes for Nigeria.
