NNL 2022/23 : The Agony Of Lagos Clubs

The new Nigeria National League (NNL) season is set to kick off 3rd March 2023 and preparations are in top gears by clubs that will take part.

In Lagos state, six teams will be participating in the new season. The clubs are Ikorodu City, Sporting Lagos, MFM FC and Joy Cometh FC, Smart City FC and Madiba FC as against eight.

Last term, Ottasolo FC got relegated while Vandrezzer left Lagos back to their base in Akwa Ibom.

With most of the stadia in Lagos experiencing downtime due to maintenance and facility upgrading, only Mobolaji Johnson Arena the only available stadium to be shared among the clubs for their home games.

Looking at the situation and wondering how will the clubs cope with the one of one venue to accommodate the four clubs and how will their fans manage with the long distance and Lagos traffic which cannot be predicted.

Also one needs to consider the financial burden on these clubs as they are run by individuals.

One will hope that the Lagos State Sports Commission will fast track the maintenance and facility upgrading of Agege Stadium and Teslim Balogun Stadium so that clubs can have choice in picking their home ground.

The use of Legacy Pitch for NNL matches should not be an option. I don’t expect the inspection team to approve such pitch for league matches this new season.
