NNL 2022/23 : Nnewi United Rechristened Edel Football Club

Nigeria National League (NNL) side, Nnewi United Football Club will prosecute next league season with a new name.

The Anambra-based side has been renamed “Edel Football Club” ahead of the next NNL season later to kick off on March 3, 2023.

The club has also made changes to its home ground by moving from Rojenny Stadium, Oba, to Awka City Stadium, Awka.

In a bid to ensure transparency and for record purposes, all paper works to validate the above changes has been done with the Anambra Football Association expected to endorse it before official communication to the NNL Secretariat in Abuja.

Former Bochum player and the General Manager of Edel Football Club, Olisa Onuchukwu stated the desire of the club to gain promotion to top flight Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

“Ultimately, we’re driven by the desire to cross the promotion rubicon this season”, starts the lanky club manager.

“Playing our way into the NPFL for next season is our prime target.

“That’s why we went for an experienced coach, Ben Okaro, who knows the system and history of our club having been part of us before.”

It was further discovered that the Netherlands-based Club’s President and Sponsor, Jude Edeh had been bankrolling the club silently for the last two seasons.

Edeh played for Rangers International before moving abroad to feature for Odra Opole in Poland and FC Forzheim of Germany

After calling it time on his playing career, Edeh relocated to the Netherlands where he serves as President of the African All Stars ‘Association of ex-African Players’ in Amsterdam.

“Besides, our players’ recruitment has been top-notch because we believe that with good players our task will be fairly well cut out” Onuchukwu continued.

“First, we want to play on the Astroturf pitch in Awka which will enhance the performance of our players.

“Again, we’re a privately owned club who are out for business. So, playing on a TV-friendly pitch like the Awka City Stadium, European clubs would fancy watching our players match video clips and this can fast track their getting clubs abroad to the financial benefit of our club.

“Don’t forget too, that it’s important we play near the seat of power where (Anambra) government can see the team and possibly offer financial assistance”, Onuchukwu explained.

Meanwhile, the team has acquired the services of Ben Okaro, a former Rangers and Green Eagles capped midfielder as team coach for the upcoming season.

Edel Football Club will compete in the Southern Conference of the NNL alongside the likes of Heartland, Abia Comets, Sporting Lagos, Smart City, Madiba, Ikorodu City, Aspire FC, Ibom Youth, Vandrezzer, One Rocket, Herserd, Rovers, Warri Wolves, Cynosure, Ekiti United, Giant Brillars, FC Ebedei, Gateway United, Ijebu United, Abeokuta Stormers, Crown FC, and Go Round.
