Nigeria’s young table tennis players delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 ITTF Africa Youth Championships in Accra, Ghana, returning home with four singles medals and reaffirming the country’s status as one of Africa’s leading forces in the sport.

Sports247 reports that leading Nigeria’s charge was the sensational Umar Ayoola, who continued his remarkable rise by winning the silver medal in the U15 Boys’ Singles.
Ayoola battled through a highly competitive field to reach the final before finishing runner-up to Egypt’s Sameh Asser.
His outstanding campaign came shortly after his impressive displays at the ITTF Hopes Week 2025 and WTT Contender Lagos 2026, further establishing him as one of the continent’s brightest young talents
Nigeria also celebrated another podium finish in the U15 Boys’ event as Samson Joshua secured a bronze medal after reaching the semi-finals.
The double podium finish highlighted the depth of Nigeria’s emerging talent and the effectiveness of the country’s youth development programme.
In the girls’ category, Aishat Rabiu added to Nigeria’s medal haul by claiming bronze in the U15 Girls’ Singles.
Rabiu produced a series of determined performances before bowing out in the semi-finals, joining Uganda’s champion Patience Anyango, Tunisia’s silver medallist Ela Saidi and Egypt’s bronze medallist Malak Zaki on the podium.
Although Nigeria did not secure a medal in the U19 singles events, the country’s strong showing in the younger age category underlined a promising future.
Tunisia’s Wassim Essid claimed the U19 Boys’ Singles title, while Algeria’s Tania Morice emerged champion in the U19 Girls’ Singles.
The performances of Ayoola, Joshua, and Rabiu provided one of Nigeria’s biggest highlights of the championship, with the trio demonstrating resilience, technical quality and the confidence to compete against Africa’s best young players.
Ayoola’s silver medal, in particular, reinforces his growing reputation as one of the continent’s most exciting prospects after a breakthrough season that also earned him the FlyValueJet Most Improved Player award.
With three podium finishes in the U15 singles events and several encouraging performances throughout the championship, Nigeria leaves Accra with renewed optimism as its next generation of table tennis stars continues to make a significant impact on the continental stage.
