Led by the country’s first lady president of the Federation, Chinonye Daphey Aliyu, Team Nigeria showcased exceptional enthusiasm, tact, capacity, competence, and resilience throughout the prestigious competition, making the nation proud.

Commending the athletes for their outstanding performance, Aliyu expressed her pride in Team Nigeria, highlighting their discipline and the quintessential “can-do” spirit of the average Nigerian.

The Nigerian contingent, comprising four swimmers – Collins Ebighan, Clinton Opute, Dorcas Okar, Adaku Nwandu, alongside Coach Sunday Tilije, and two board members, Mrs. Stella Ebegboni and Secretary General Mr. Joel Akinluwa, displayed immense skill and determination on the world stage.

Aliyu emphasized the importance of funding in developing athletes and propelling them to achieve even greater heights in global competitions.

She firmly believes that with adequate support, Nigerian swimmers have the potential to rank among the top 10 nations in the sport worldwide.

The success at Japan 2023 has revealed the hidden talents and immense potential of athletes in the country, and she envisions a bright future for Nigerian swimming.

Despite their remarkable performance, Aliyu acknowledged that financial constraints held the team back from achieving an even better outcome.

She called on the government to step up and ensure early preparation and adequate funding for the nation’s athletes, especially for events of such magnitude, which are highly esteemed and popular in the sporting world.

One of the standout athletes, Clinton Opute, received a scholarship from the world athletic body to study in Budapest, Hungary, as a recognition of his exemplary swimming talent.

Another promising swimmer, Collins Ebigha, has been on scholarship at the Karzan High-Performance Centre, further affirming the potential and promise of Nigerian swimmers.

The Nigerian Aquatic Federation‘s remarkable ascent in the global rankings is a testament to the talent and hard work of the athletes and the dedication of the coaching staff.

With continued support and investment, Nigeria’s aquatic athletes are set to make a significant impact on the world stage, cementing the nation’s position among the elite in international swimming competitions.
