The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has officially announced the nation’s team for the 2025 World Athletics Relays set to take place in Guangzhou, China.
The event, scheduled for May 3rd and 4th, serves as a qualifying ground for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, and Nigeria is set to compete in four of the six relay events.
According to the AFN, the Nigerian contingent will feature a blend of seasoned athletes and rising stars as the country aims to secure automatic qualification spots in the men’s and women’s 4x100m, as well as the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays.
AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, while unveiling the squad at a press briefing in Abuja, expressed confidence in the team’s potential to make the nation proud.
“Our athletes have shown promising form in recent competitions, and we believe they have what it takes to bring Nigeria into the spotlight on the global stage once again,” he said.
Team Nigeria’s selection reflects the federation’s commitment to youth development and international competitiveness. Notably, some athletes who impressed at the African Games and National Trials have been included, signaling a fresh injection of talent.
The 2025 World Relays will see over 40 countries vying for top honors and Olympic and World Championships slots, making it a high-stakes competition.
With preparations in full swing, the Nigerian team is expected to travel to China later this month for a final training camp ahead of the event.
The AFN has also called on Nigerians at home and abroad to support the team as they carry the nation’s hopes to Guangzhou.
