Nigeria is preparing to welcome international polo competition to Abuja in November, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) exploring is preparing to welcome international polo competition to Abuja in November, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) exploring support for the hosting of the Federation of International Polo (FIP) Zone E World Cup Play-Offs.

The tournament is scheduled for November 9–16, 2026, at the Guards Polo Club in Abuja. Nigeria will compete alongside India, Iran and Pakistan for qualification for the 2027 FIP World Cup finals in Uruguay.

The hosting opportunity presents Nigeria with a chance to attract international visitors, promote sports tourism and demonstrate its ability to organise competitions involving athletes and teams from different countries.
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, received a delegation of the Nigeria Polo Association (NPA), led by its chairman, Suleman Abubakar, on Monday, October 12. The delegation briefed the commission on preparations for the tournament and sought support for the event.

Dikko expressed the commission’s willingness to consider areas of support within its available resources, stressing that the competition should be treated as a national event requiring cooperation among relevant stakeholders.

Sports247 reports that the hosting arrangement comes with opportunities beyond the competition itself. International sporting events can create demand for accommodation, transportation, hospitality services and other businesses that cater to visiting teams, officials and spectators.

For Abuja, the tournament could provide an opportunity to showcase the city to an international audience while creating business opportunities around the event.
However, delivering those benefits will depend on effective planning, coordination among stakeholders and the ability to attract spectators and visitors.

The competition also gives Nigerian polo an opportunity to demonstrate its development against other countries in the Zone E qualification contest.

For the Nigeria Polo Association, securing the hosting rights represents an important step. The next task is to ensure that the preparations translate into a successful tournament.

Nigeria will hope to make the most of the opportunity by delivering a well-organised event that strengthens the country’s reputation as a destination for international sporting competitions.
