NIGERIA RUGBY 2018 RUN DOWN OF ACTIVITIES

1. Racing 10’s Rugby Tournament was held in February to usher in the 2018 Rugby Season.

2. An Extra Ordinary General Assembly to ratify the New Nigeria Rugby Constitution was held in March, supervised by Rugby Africa and observed by the Nigeria Olympic Committee & Federal Ministry of Sports in March.

3. Rugby debuted as a demonstration event during the closing ceremony of the Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival in April.

4. The Rugby Federation paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence Staff and other Service Chiefs including the Inspector General of Police towards introducing Rugby in their respective formations – April

5. Rugby featured at the Chief of Defence Staff Schools Sports Clinic in Abuja alongside other 4 other sports in May

6. National Rugby League with 21 Clubs comprising of (Lagos Rugby League Div 1 – 4 Clubs, Div 2 – 4 Clubs, South South & South East Rugby League – 4 Clubs, North West Rugby League – 6 Clubs and North Central Rugby League – 3 Clubs) was held from March – September

7. Rugby Africa lifted Nigeria’s Rugby Suspension in May

8. Nigeria Played it’s first International Test Match after the lifting of the suspension against Niger in Miami (Nigeria 59 : 13 Niger) in August

9. Racing Rugby Fc won the Gosar Sevens Tournament held at Ajegunle in September

10. Nigeria participated and won Silver Medal at the Rugby Africa Regional Sevens Men Tournament in Ivory Coast in September

11. Rugby debuted as a Medal Winning event at the National Youth Games in Ilorin Kwara State in September

12. Barewa Rugby Fc won the Lillekar 15’s Rugby Tournament held in Zaria Kaduna State in September.

13. Barewa Rugby Fc won the North West Rugby League, Plateau Bulls Rugby Fc won the North Central Rugby League. Rocket Bull Rugby Fc won the South South & South East Rugby League while Cowrie Rugby Fc won the Lagos Rugby League.

14. World Rugby endorsed the Rugby Africa’s recommendation and officially lifted the Suspension on Nigeria Rugby in October.

15. Eco 2 Schools Rugby Tournament was held at Ajegunle in Lagos, in November

16. EHIBAM SCHOOLS RUGBY TOURNAMENT WAS LAUNCHED in Benin City in DECEMBER

17. Eco 2 Rugby Club won the Sandeebeach Rugby Tournament held at Tarkwabay in Lagos in December.

18. Barewa Rugby Fc defeated Cowrie Rugby Fc by 13 points to 5 points in the National Rugby League Finals tagged the President’s Cup in December to emerging the back to back National Rugby League Champions.

19. Nigeria gained promotion to play in the Africa Rugby Silver Cup in the 2019 Rugby Season from the Bronze Cup it was for 9years before suspension last year.

It was a most successful year pregnant for 2019!
