Nigeria Recognizes As Fastest-Growing Cricket Nation At ICC Reception In Lagos

In a resplendent reception held on Wednesday, August 30th, the International Cricket Council (ICC) proudly acknowledged Nigeria as the world’s fastest-growing cricket nation.

The occasion, graced by the prestigious presence of the Cricket World Cup trophy, witnessed Nigeria, South Africa, and Uganda being selected as hosts for the trophy procession leading up to the ODI World Cup.

Anticipation and excitement loom large as the cricketing world gears up for the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup scheduled to transpire in India from October 5th to November 19th.

ICC’s General Manager of Development, Williams Glenwright, highlighted Nigeria’s remarkable growth, proclaiming, “Nigeria is our fastest growing member around the world.

We came to learn from the NCF to better understand what they are doing successfully and apply it elsewhere around the world so that other members can be equally successful as Nigeria.”

Underpinning their commitment to Nigeria’s burgeoning cricketing aspirations, Glenwright expounded on the ICC’s eagerness to foster Nigeria’s development.

The ICC aims to collaborate closely with the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) in propelling its vision forward.

The President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Uyi Akpata, fervently affirmed the board’s unswerving dedication to elevating the nation’s cricketing landscape.

“With the grand entrance and the celebration that greeted the trophy here, imagine what will happen if we actually win the World Cup; a lot of my people say we will shut down Lagos,” exclaimed Akpata, underscoring the profound impact a victory would have on the nation.

Akpata also disclosed ongoing discussions with Cricket South Africa concerning player placement, emphasizing the strategic pathway towards sustainable development.
