Nigeria Olympic Committee Unveils Safeguarding Handbook and SAFE SPACE Initiative at Gateway Games to Enhance Athlete Welfare

In a groundbreaking move to prioritize the safety and well-being of athletes, the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has announced the launch of its Safeguarding Handbook alongside the innovative SAFE SPACE initiative.

This major development will be unveiled at the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF), also known as the Gateway Games, which will take place in Abeokuta, Ogun State from May 16 to May 31, 2025.

The initiative is in line with the International Olympic Committee’s commitment to fostering safe sporting environments, a goal they’ve championed since 2004.

In collaboration with My Space My Time (MSMT), the NOC Safeguard Commission will introduce a cutting-edge mental health platform that will provide crucial assessments for both athletes and officials during the Games.

The insights gathered will guide the creation of stronger safeguarding policies aimed at protecting athletes across Nigeria’s sporting landscape.

According to Tony Nezianya, NOC’s spokesperson, the Safeguarding Handbook will serve as an essential resource for coaches, athletes, and sports organizations, offering strategies to prevent harm, recognize abuse, and effectively address safeguarding concerns.

As part of the SAFE SPACE initiative, athletes and officials will have access to a dedicated hub that provides training, support, and advocacy.

This platform will empower stakeholders to foster an environment of care and respect, ensuring athletes can perform at their best in a safe and supportive atmosphere.

Engr. Habu Gumel, President of the Nigeria Olympic Commitee, expressed the importance of the initiative, stating, “Sport has the power to change lives, and it must be a safe and nurturing environment for athletes to thrive.

The launch of the Safeguarding Handbook and SAFE SPACE initiative represents a major step towards creating a culture of respect and support in sports.”

The NOC encourages State Sports Councils, commissions, athletes, and other stakeholders to engage with the SAFE SPACE initiative by visiting the Safe Space Zone during the Gateway Games, reinforcing the commitment to athlete protection.

The Safeguard Commission members include Dr. Olajide Joseph Adebola (Chairman), Mr. Femi Abioye, Dr. Oluwaseun Nariwoh, Dr. Bakare Ummukulthoum, Ms. Justina Erezi, and Mrs. Kemi Obidahunsi (Administrative Secretary).
