‘Nigeria Has Future World Champions’ — NCAA Finalist Demands Better Treatment For Athletes

NCAA 400m finalist Favour Onyah has challenged Nigerian athletics authorities to provide greater support for athletes, insisting the country has enough talent to become a force in the 400 metres.

Onyah believes Nigeria possesses one of its strongest generations of quarter-milers but warned that their potential can only be realised if athletes receive the backing they deserve.

“Nigeria has a bright future in the 400 metres,” Onyah said.

The sprinter pointed to the quality of athletes currently competing in the women’s ranks, highlighting names such as Chioma Nwachukwu, Esther Elo Joseph and Patience Okon-George as evidence of the country’s growing strength.

According to Onyah, both the men’s and women’s teams have the ability to compete with the world’s best if given the right environment.

“We have athletes capable of achieving remarkable success,” she added.

The NCAA finalist, however, stressed that talent alone will not be enough without proper investment from the federation and relevant stakeholders.

She called for improved welfare, increased sponsorship and stronger motivation for athletes, arguing that these factors are essential for sustained success on the international stage.

“Our athletes need better care and more support,” Onyah stated.

The Nigerian sprinter believes greater investment would not only help athletes break records but also increase the country’s chances of winning medals at major global competitions.

Her comments come as Nigerian athletics continues to produce a new generation of talented runners aiming to make an impact at the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and future Olympic competitions.
