Mourinho Explains Deep Bond With Africa: “I Can’t Even Walk There”

Renowned football tactician José Mourinho has opened up on his long-standing connection with Africa, admitting that the overwhelming love he receives across the continent makes it almost impossible for him to move freely whenever he visits.

Speaking in a light-hearted but revealing moment, the former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan coach joked that Africa may be the one place he struggles to visit incognito.

“I can’t go to Africa,” Mourinho said with a smile. “I have too many fans there… everywhere, really.”

The Portuguese manager attributed that affection to his years of working closely with some of Africa’s finest football exports during his glittering coaching career. Mourinho recalled coaching stars from across the continent, many of whom played key roles in his most successful teams.

“I’ve coached players from all over the continent: Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou from Côte d’Ivoire, Geremi and Samuel Eto’o from Cameroon, John Obi Mikel from Nigeria, Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari from Ghana,” he said.

According to Mourinho, those relationships created a lasting bond that extends far beyond the pitch. The respect he showed African players and the trust he placed in them during big matches helped cement his popularity among fans across the continent.

“Whenever I go to Africa, I can’t even walk,” he added. “People show me so much love.”

Mourinho’s comments highlight his unique status among African football supporters, many of whom still associate his name with the golden era of Chelsea’s dominance in Europe, powered by African stars. Even years after those triumphs, the connection remains strong, underlining Africa’s enduring appreciation for coaches who value and elevate its players on the global stage.

While he may joke about staying away, the message is clear: José Mourinho remains one of the most admired football figures across Africa, a testament to the legacy built through trust, success, and mutual respect.
