Owerri football legend Mobi Patrick Oparaku performed the ceremonial kick-off of the 2026/2027 Nigeria National League (NNL) season as Heartland FC and Crown FC played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, on Sunday, November 1, 2026.

Oparaku’s selection for the ceremonial kick-off carried significant historical importance, given his deep connection with Owerri and Heartland FC. Born in Umunkwocha, Umuonyeche, Owerri Municipal Council, Imo State, the former Nigerian international began his professional football journey with Iwuanyanwu Nationale, now known as Heartland FC.

Having started his career just behind the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Oparaku went on to feature for clubs in Belgium, the United States and Jamaica before returning to Nigeria, where he won the league title and Federation Cup with Enyimba.

His international career remains distinguished, having been part of Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets squad that won the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Japan, the Dream Team that clinched the historic Olympic gold medal at Atlanta 1996, and the Super Eagles squad at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.

Meanwhile, the opening match lived up to expectations as Heartland, managed by former Super Eagles international Emmanuel Amuneke, took an early lead through Ekene Osuigwe in the 11th minute.

Jonathan Osondu doubled the Naze Millionaires’ advantage deep into first-half stoppage time, scoring in the 45+3rd minute to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at the break.

However, Crown FC demonstrated resilience after the restart, with Osas Kelvin and Lekan Mustapha finding the net to complete an impressive comeback and secure a 2-2 draw for the visitors.

The result means both teams begin their 2026/2027 NNL campaigns with a point, although Heartland will reflect on an opportunity to secure maximum points after surrendering their two-goal advantage.

Oparaku’s ceremonial involvement added a special touch to the occasion, connecting the league’s new campaign with one of Nigeria’s celebrated football generations.
