Some SS3 students of the public section at Mayflower School, Ikenne, Ogun State spent the morning of Thursday playing football in front of the institution’s private arm, as it was a day free from the ongoing WAEC final year examination for most of them.
Sports247 caught up with about 15 of the male students while displaying their football skills and they confessed that the school does not get into regular sporting action, as their premium attention is on academics.

They, however, mentioned one of their female colleagues, Sofiat Yusuf, as a very fast sprinter and named her their most promising athlete, while also pointing out that barrel-chested Marvellous Amos has the potentials of being of boxer.
However, Amos, who hails from Benue State but was born in Abeokuta and lives in nearby Odoogbolu with his parents, said he prefers playing football, in which he is trying to excel as a right-winger.
Ironically, only one of them is in the school’s football team and the lad, Jamal Salau told Sports247 that he wants to be famous in the round leather game, but hevis yet to get enough support in order to achieve his dream.
“I am a science student, and Biology is my best subject. I am in the school team, but we don’t play regularly and I don’t have a club yet. I’ll register with a football academy after my WAEC exam,” the exuberant lad disclosed.
Independent checks by Sports247 revealed that sporting interest is low in both the public and private sections of Mayflower School, to the extent that what could be described as efforts to build a mini stadium within the premises has been abandoned after the first spectators’ stand was erected.
However, the first-generation school, which was founded by renowned nationalist, Dr Tai Solarin and his expatriate wife, Sheila, on the outskirts of Ikenne, is still highly acclaimed for its qualitative academic deliveries in both the public and private sections.
