Masilela: South Africa Counting on Nigeria to Finish the Job Against Benin

Former Bafana Bafana defender, Tsepo Masilela, has expressed confidence that South Africa will still qualify as Group C winners in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, placing his faith in the Super Eagles of Nigeria to deliver against Benin Republic.

Masilela, who was part of the golden generation that represented South Africa at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, said he remains optimistic despite Bafana Bafana’s recent 1–1 draw with Zimbabwe.

Speaking in Johannesburg, the former Kaizer Chiefs full-back noted that while the draw was disappointing, there is still every reason to believe that results will go their way once the final round of matches is played.

“I’m not panicking at all,” Masilela stated confidently. “Nigeria is a big football nation, and I trust they’ll do their job against Benin Republic.

They have quality players, and I believe they won’t go down easily. Once they get a win, we’ll take care of business in our own game — and that should be enough to see us through.”

The veteran defender urged South Africa’s players to focus on securing their own victory rather than worrying about other results but admitted that all eyes will still be on Nigeria’s clash in Uyo.

“It’s simple — win your game, and let Nigeria handle theirs. I believe both teams can come out successful,” he said.

Masilela’s faith in the Super Eagles echoes a growing sentiment among South African supporters who see Nigeria’s potential win over Benin Republic as pivotal to Bafana Bafana’s qualification chances.

With just one matchday remaining, the race for the top spot in Group C remains wide open — and Masilela insists South Africa’s destiny, though complicated, is still within reach.
