Nigerian-born rugby star, Maro Itoje has been replaced as England’s captain for their upcoming Nations Championship fixtures against South Africa, Fiji, and Argentina, following the coach’s decision to rest the Saracens RBC star.
Sports247 gathered that, while Itoje has not been called up England’s coach, Steve Borthwick for the impending encounters in the inaugural competition, the captain’s band will now go to Jamie George, who will lead the side for their summer games.
Itoje appears set to have a very ideal and able replacement, as George previously captained England for 12 Tests in 2024, before the current skipper took over the following year, and will take the reins again in his Saracens teammate’s absence.
This comes following a confirmation of a hint by England’s coach that he had a desire to rest Itoje, due to what he referred to as a challenging year, with a British Lions tour, demanding Six Nations contest and death of his mother in November.
“The Nations Championship presents an exciting challenge for this group. We will face strong opposition in demanding environments, with extensive travel, and changes in climate all testing the squad throughout the tournament.
“I am sure by preparing well to the highest standards from one another every day, we will be well placed to meet a very demanding summer schedule. We’ve selected a squad with a good blend of experience and emerging talent,” said Borthwick.
