Former Super Eagles head coach James Peters has backed the decision to retain Eric Chelle as Nigeria’s head coach, but has warned the Nigeria Football Federation against offering a contract beyond its financial capacity.
Peters believes continuity is crucial for the Super Eagles as they seek to recover from the disappointment of missing back-to-back FIFA World Cups.
“I’m in support of giving Eric Chelle a new contract, provided it is within the means of the NFF,” Peters said.
The former national team coach argued that changing coaches too frequently has done little to help Nigerian football, insisting Chelle should be given the opportunity to build a competitive squad.
According to Peters, the Franco-Malian is entering a crucial transition period in which he can reshape the team for future success.
“This is an opportunity for him to manage the transition of the team,” he added.
Peters urged Chelle to continue expanding the player pool by identifying talented footballers both at home and abroad.
He believes discovering fresh talent will be vital as Nigeria prepares for major competitions over the next few years.
“He should keep looking for new players within Nigeria and overseas,” he stated.
The former coach also stressed that Chelle’s immediate priorities should include guiding the Super Eagles to qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and ending Nigeria’s World Cup qualification struggles by securing a place at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Peters maintained that patience, continuity and prudent financial management will be essential if the Super Eagles are to return to competing consistently among Africa’s elite.
