In another exciting display at the African U18 and U20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta, Nigeria’s Emerald Makua delivered a podium-worthy performance in the U18 women’s Shot Put event, clinching the bronze medal with a solid throw of 14.30m.
The event, held at the iconic MKO Abiola Stadium, saw Namibia’s Marika Weitz assert her dominance with a massive effort of 16.32m, a mark that secured her the gold medal and firmly separated her from the rest of the field.

Egypt’s Eab Tamek Alaa narrowly edged Makua for the silver medal, throwing 14.58m, just 28cm ahead of the Nigerian.
Makua’s performance adds to Team Nigeria’s growing medal tally at the continental championships, and reflects her rising potential in field events. Though falling short of the top two spots, the Nigerian youngster showed poise and strength, competing strongly among Africa’s elite junior talents.
This bronze medal continues Nigeria’s tradition of producing top female athletes in throwing events, and Makua’s name now joins the growing list of homegrown talents making an impression on the international stage.
As the Championships progress, Nigeria will be hoping for more podium finishes across both track and field to solidify their presence as a continental powerhouse in athletics
