Maduka Okoye Set for Serie A Return After Betting Ban — Udinese Teammate Confirms

Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, is set to make a long-awaited return to action in the Italian Serie A next week following the expiration of his suspension for alleged involvement in a betting-related incident.

Okoye, who guards the posts for Udinese Calcio, was banned in late July after being found guilty of deliberately earning a yellow card during a league encounter against Lazio — an act reportedly linked to a rigged betting scheme.

After months on the sidelines, Okoye is now fully cleared to rejoin the squad, with his teammate and fellow goalkeeper Daniele Padelli confirming the development during “Udinese Tonight”, a weekly football show aired on TV12.

Padelli revealed that the Nigerian international has maintained top form and focus throughout the suspension period.

“He’s training well, as if he were supposed to play every week — maybe even more than before,” Padelli said. “It was an opportunity to improve some small gaps. He’s prepared well in recent months; now the break is over and it’s up to the coach to decide who plays.”

In a lighthearted tone, Padelli added,

“The only certainty is that I’ll end up even further down the pecking order,” he joked. “Maduka has a strong personality — he doesn’t let expectations get to him.”

Okoye’s imminent return comes as a major boost for Udinese, who have struggled for consistency between the sticks since his absence. His reinstatement also offers renewed hope for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, as preparations intensify ahead of key 2026 World Cup qualifiers later this year.

Having proven his resilience both on and off the pitch, Okoye’s comeback will be closely watched — not just as a redemption story, but as a test of mental fortitude for one of Africa’s most promising goalkeepers.
