In 1986, he embarked on a new chapter by venturing into Benin Republic, donning the jersey of AS Dragons FC de l’Ouémé. Rufai’s European expedition saw him spend six productive years in Belgium, representing K.S.C. Lokeren Oost-Vlaanderen and K.S.K. Beveren.

A pivotal moment in Rufai’s career unfolded in 1983 when he made his debut appearance for the senior national team.

His remarkable skills were further highlighted by securing victory for Nigeria in the 1994 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and subsequently participating in the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups.
