Vice President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Adamu Lawan, has commended Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) President Habu Ahmed Gumel for supporting the IOC/BFN Level 2 Technical Coaching Course in Abuja.
Lawan said the nine-day programme, which runs from September 4 to 12, is crucial to Nigeria’s ambition of producing more elite badminton players and improving the country’s performance at international competitions.
According to him, developing athletes must go hand in hand with developing the coaches responsible for their preparation, insisting that quality coaching remains a major foundation for sporting success.
“For every talented player, there is a coach behind that player. For every medal won, there is a coach who may never be seen on the podium. That is why this training is very important.”
Lawan explained that the coaches participating in the programme would return to their various locations with improved knowledge and skills that could be transferred to athletes across the country.
The course is focused on modern coaching techniques, technical and tactical development, athlete preparation, training planning, talent identification, competition management and the application of international badminton standards.
He also pointed to the increasing investment and competitiveness of countries such as India, Japan and the United Arab Emirates in badminton, saying Nigeria must strengthen its technical capacity if it wants to compete more effectively on the international stage.
Lawan expressed optimism that the coaching investment would produce better results for Nigeria, particularly at future editions of the Lagos Classic, where he wants the country to compete strongly.
“Our vision is for badminton to become one of the best sports in Nigeria. God willing, next year at the Lagos Classic, we want to see Nigeria participate fully and compete strongly.”
NOC President Gumel, who officially opened the coaching course, also stressed the importance of continuous education for coaches, saying sporting success depends not only on athletes’ talent but also on the knowledge and commitment of those guiding their development.
The programme is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s coaching pool while creating better systems for identifying and developing young badminton talents.
For Lawan, the investment in coaches is ultimately an investment in athletes and Nigeria’s sporting future.
With stronger technical knowledge on the bench, the BFN believes Nigeria can build the next generation of badminton champions.
