Lagos’s Athletes Intensify Preparations Ahead National Sports Festival

With the 22nd National Sports Festival draws closer, Lagos State athletes are undergoing intensive training at various designated venues in preparation for the prestigious biennial Games, scheduled to take place from May 16 to 30, 2025, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The initiative is a strategic part of the Lagos State Sports Commission’s efforts, under the visionary leadership of Director General Lekan Fatodu.

It provides a conducive environment for athletes to continue to sharpen skills and elevate their performances as they prepare to proudly represent the state on the national stage.

From para table tennis to taekwondo, handball, basketball, Weightlifting,tennis and other registered sports, Lagos’ athletes are looking forward to represent the state with the level of preparation and encouragement receiving from the commission.

Speaking on the level of preparation, Anumnu Tochukwu, a kickboxer, said he’s ready to represent the state at the forthcoming national festival, adding that with the level of the training and support from the technical crew, they are going to Ogun State to make a good statement and come out victorious.

“This time around, we are hoping to come out better with more gold than silver and bronze medals.

it’s helpful, and we appreciate it. Because we believe it will help us in this forthcoming National Sports Festival, and with the training we had so far, we are going to come out victorious.”

Tochukwu, who grabbed a gold medal in Delta State, added that with the level of preparations in place, they are ready to surpass the records of their last outing.

Captain of women volleyball team, Comfort Amaonwu, stressed that they are going to make the state proud by winning a gold medal in their event, adding that the team will continue on its training and other areas needed to improve on their performance.

She applauded the state government and the sports commission for making everything possible as the festival draws closer.

Yesterday, the state received the National Torch of Unity, signifying its readiness to participate in Nigeria’s version of the Olympics. This marks a commitment to creating an enabling environment for young men and women to excel across various disciplines and showcase their talents on the national stage.
