The Acting Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Aron Akerejola has praised the organisers of the Niger Delta Games, describing the initiative as a bold and timely intervention in the rebuilding of grassroots sports across the region.
In a statement, the chairman commended Mr. Itiako Ikpokpo and his organisation, Dunamis Icon, for what he called “an innovation driven by sacrifice, vision, and an uncommon commitment to the future of Nigerian sports.”
According to him, at a time when many young talents lack structure, exposure, and opportunity, the Niger Delta Games is creating a vital platform for discovery and development, particularly in communities where sports infrastructure and organized competitions have been limited.
“This is not just another sporting event,” he noted. “It is a deliberate effort to restore hope, discipline, and direction to young people through sports. What Mr. Ikpokpo and the Dunamis Icon team have done is to invest in the foundation — and that is where true transformation begins.”
Mr Akerejola emphasized that rebuilding grassroots sports requires more than funding; it demands persistence, personal sacrifice, and a long-term vision — qualities he said are evident in the planning and execution of the Games.
The Lagos SWAN chairman further announced that the association would be fully present at the Niger Delta Games, positioning itself not only as a media observer but as a partner committed to amplifying the stories of emerging talents.
“Lagos SWAN will be in full attendance as a partner in progress. We understand the power of visibility and narrative in sports development. These young athletes deserve to be seen, heard, and celebrated on a national stage,” he said.
He added that sports journalism plays a crucial role in sustaining such initiatives, noting that consistent coverage can attract support, inspire participation, and ensure continuity.
The Niger Delta Games is expected to bring together athletes from across the oil-producing region, serving as a platform for talent identification, youth engagement, and regional unity through sport.
Observers believe the initiative could become a model for grassroots sports revival nationwide if sustained.
For Lagos SWAN, the message is clear: the journey to national sporting excellence begins in local communities — and the Niger Delta Games represents a significant step in that direction.
