Katsina Golden Stars Badminton Club put the state on the sporting map after an outstanding performance at the 2026 North-West Badminton Championship held in Zaria, Kaduna State.
The club secured a total of 18 medals, including 4 gold, 10 silver, and 4 bronze, across multiple age categories and events.
Organized by Matrix and Fertilizers in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, the championship featured competitors from Kano, Kaduna, Zamfara, Jigawa, Sokoto, Katsina, and Kebbi states. Katsina Golden Stars participated in U-12, U-15, U-17, Senior categories, and exhibition matches.
In the U-12 category, the club claimed 2 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals. The U-15 and U-17 divisions yielded 5 silver medals collectively. In the Senior category, athletes took home 2 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medal, while the exhibition match added another silver to the tally.
Speaking after the awards ceremony, Katsina State Sports Commissioner, Eng. Surajo Yazid Abukur, congratulated the athletes for their exceptional performance.
Describing the achievement as a historic moment for the state’s sports sector, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting sports associations for the development of athletics across Katsina.
“The foresight of Golden Stars officials in nurturing young talent is commendable and will serve the state well at national competitions,” Eng. Abukur said.
Golden Stars Badminton Club Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Charanchi, highlighted the championship’s scale, noting the participation of seven states from the North-West region.
He assured the commissioner and sports enthusiasts that the club is ready to maintain its presence and competitiveness in national and regional events.
The championship also featured the presentation of an award of excellence to the Executive Director of Sports, Abdullahi Bello Rawayau, alongside the decoration of finalist players, marking a memorable conclusion to the tournament.
Katsina Golden Stars’ performance underlines the club’s growing reputation for developing young talent and its capacity to compete at the highest levels in Nigerian badminton.
