Team Nigeria has recorded its first victory at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, defeating the Cayman Islands 21–17 in an entertaining Men’s 3×3 Basketball Pool A encounter on Friday morning.
The victory came after Team Nigeria had earlier opened its campaign in the swimming events, with Clinton Opute competing in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley. Opute finished sixth in Heat 1 against a quality field led by England’s Thomas Dean, officially marking Nigeria’s first appearance in the pool at Glasgow 2026.
On the basketball court, however, the Green and White quickly found their rhythm.
Displaying pace, discipline and composure, the Nigerian side produced a confident performance to overcome a determined Cayman Islands team and secure an important opening victory in Pool A.
The result gives Team Nigeria an early advantage in the group standings and provides the perfect start as the country’s athletes continue their quest for medals at the Games.
Sports247, reporting from Glasgow, observed jubilant celebrations from the Nigerian camp after the final buzzer as players embraced one another while officials applauded a performance that reflected the team’s determination and fighting spirit.
Also present courtside to cheer on the team was the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, who celebrated the victory with the players and officials immediately after the game.
An excited Olopade congratulated the team on the impressive start to Nigeria’s campaign and urged them to remain focused as the competition progresses.
“This is the kind of start we were hoping for. Congratulations to the team for their fighting spirit and determination. Enjoy this victory, but stay focused because the journey has only just begun. His presence at the venue underscored the National Sports Commission’s commitment to providing unwavering support for Team Nigeria throughout the Commonwealth Games, with senior officials standing firmly behind the athletes as they pursue the country’s ambitious medal target.
The opening-day success is expected to provide a significant confidence boost ahead of more action involving Nigerian athletes later on Friday in Boxing and Para Powerlifting, where some of the country’s strongest medal prospects will be in action.
Nigeria is represented in Glasgow by 74 athletes competing across 10 sports, with the National Sports Commission targeting 16 to 20 gold medals.
Since making its Commonwealth Games debut in 1950, Team Nigeria has established itself as one of the competition’s most successful nations, winning 271 medals—including 82 gold, 84 silver and 105 bronze.
With the first victory already secured and more medal events still to come, Team Nigeria has made an encouraging start to its Glasgow 2026 campaign.
