Team Nigeria’s impressive showing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games continued in the swimming pool on Tuesday as Abduljabar Adama and Colins Obi Ebingha both secured qualification for the men’s 50m butterfly semi-finals, delivering another major boost for the country’s campaign.
Competing in a high-quality Heat 8 at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, the Nigerian duo rose to the occasion against some of the Commonwealth’s fastest swimmers.
Teen sensation Abduljabar Adama touched the wall in 23.99 seconds to finish fourth, while compatriot Colins Obi Ebingha was right behind in fifth with 24.01 seconds. Both performances were good enough to earn coveted semi-final spots.
Australia’s Ben Armbruster won the heat in 23.13 seconds, ahead of South Africa’s Calvyn Justus (23.44) and Singapore’s Tzen Wei Teong (23.80), but the spotlight from a Nigerian perspective belonged to Adama and Ebingha, who refused to be overawed by the quality of the field.
The qualification marks another milestone for 17-year-old Abduljabar Adama, who has emerged as one of Nigeria’s brightest swimming prospects. Adama has already broken multiple national records in freestyle and butterfly events and has been leading Nigeria’s resurgence in international swimming over the past year.
For Colins Obi Ebingha, the performance was equally significant. The experienced swimmer, who represented Nigeria at the World Championships and African Games, matched one of the best long-course butterfly swims of his career to keep his Commonwealth Games medal hopes alive.
The double qualification continues what has been a memorable Games for Team Nigeria. From the weightlifting gold rush to athletics successes and the historic wheelchair basketball quarter-final berth, Nigerian athletes are making their presence felt across multiple sports.
With both Adama and Ebingha now through to the semi-finals, Nigerian fans will be hoping the pair can produce another inspired performance and challenge the Commonwealth’s swimming heavyweights for places in the final.
