“It Has Not Been Easy” — Village-Bred Goalkeeper Odemero Silas Refuses to Give Up on European Football Dream

For Odemero Silas, the dream of becoming a professional footballer began far from the bright lights of European stadiums, on the humble pitches of his village, where passion for the game first inspired him to believe in a bigger future.

Today, the young goalkeeper is chasing that dream with China Sun Star Football Club in Lagos, navigating the challenges of competitive football while holding firmly to his ambition of playing professionally in Europe.

Speaking to Sport247.ng, Silas reflected on his humble beginnings and the determination that has kept him going despite the difficulties.

“I’ve been playing football from a very young age, from my village. So I think I can do it,” he said.

However, the transition from village football to the demanding Lagos football environment has tested his resilience, exposing him to tougher competition and greater expectations.

“It has not been easy,” Silas admitted, acknowledging the enormous responsibility of being a goalkeeper, particularly when teammates depend on him to protect a lead.

The youngster explained that earning the trust of teammates remains crucial to his development, stressing that goalkeeping requires confidence, consistency and mental strength.

Despite the challenges, Silas continues to gain valuable experience through tournaments with China Sun Star FC, including competitions associated with the Nigeria Nationwide League One.

“We have played so many tournaments, so we are trying our best,” he explained.

Beyond his determination, the aspiring goalkeeper draws strength from his faith, believing that hard work and divine guidance can help him overcome obstacles.

“We are still pushing and trying our best and praying to God to give us the wisdom and understanding to do more,” he added.

For Silas, however, the ultimate destination remains Europe.

“I would love to play in Europe as a professional footballer,” he declared.

While his breakthrough remains uncertain, the young goalkeeper’s journey reflects the hopes of countless grassroots footballers across Nigeria who continue to chase life-changing opportunities.

For now, Silas has no European contract or international recognition, but he possesses something that keeps his dream alive: the determination to continue fighting for his chance.
