Former Super Eagles assistant coach Sylvanus Okpala has defended the Nigeria Football Federation over criticism of the quality of opponents lined up for upcoming international friendlies, insisting that engagement is more important than opposition.

Speaking on the issue, Okpala dismissed concerns about the profile of teams Nigeria will face during the next FIFA window.
“It doesn’t matter who we play,” he said.
According to him, the most critical factor at this stage is ensuring that the Super Eagles remain active, especially after missing out on major tournaments.
“We just need to be playing,” he implied.
Okpala stressed that regular matches are essential for maintaining team cohesion, fitness, and tactical development, elements that can quickly decline without consistent competition.
“It keeps the team sharp,” he noted.
He also pointed out that friendlies provide valuable opportunities for the coaching staff to experiment with new players and systems without the pressure of competitive fixtures.
“It’s about building,” he added.
For Okpala, focusing too much on the reputation of opponents misses the bigger picture, which is long-term development and preparation.
“We need continuity,” he stressed.
