‘It Affected Him’ Rolfes Opens Up — Says Failed Saudi Move Took Toll On Boniface

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has revealed that the failed transfer of Victor Boniface to Saudi Arabia had a noticeable impact on the striker’s mindset.

Speaking on the situation, Rolfes admitted that the episode created an uncomfortable environment for both the player and the club.

“It wasn’t easy,” he said.

According to the Leverkusen chief, the uncertainty surrounding the move affected Boniface psychologically, particularly given the expectations and discussions that had taken place.

“It affected him,” he implied.

Rolfes explained that situations like this can be challenging for players, especially when a potential transfer does not materialize as planned.

“It’s difficult to handle,” he noted.

He also revealed that he personally spoke with the Nigerian forward after the situation unfolded, offering support and helping him refocus.

“We had a conversation,” he added.

Following that period, Boniface was able to reintegrate into the squad and regain his focus, returning to training and competition with renewed determination.

“He came back strong,” Rolfes stressed.

The incident highlights the mental side of football, where off-field developments can significantly influence on-field performance.

For Rolfes, the key was ensuring that Boniface felt supported and valued within the team.

“It’s about support,” he said.

As the striker continues his development, the focus will be on maintaining consistency and building on his performances.

For Rolfes, the message is clear.

Football is not just physical.

It’s mental.

And managing both is essential for success.
