The launch focused more on practical training rather than speeches. Led by former national champion and multiple medalist Okpuakpo Forcados, a team of instructors provided instructions and engaged the young swimmers in various aspects of the sport, particularly focusing on techniques.

Idowu Otukoya, the initiator and CEO of Insight Sports Limited, emphasized that the mission of the Lagos Swim Academy is to offer high-quality swim instruction and coaching to individuals of all ages and skill levels. The academy aims to create a safe and supportive environment that encourages swimmers to achieve their goals and develop a lifelong passion for swimming.

Otukoya further stated that the academy aims to provide a comprehensive swim program
catering to swimmers at all levels, with experienced coaches and instructors dedicated to
helping swimmers achieve their goals.

Sola Aiyepeku, the Executive Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission, commended the founder of SwimLagos Academy and urged residents of Lagos to embrace the academy’s ideals, which align with the government’s vision of fostering a swimming culture among the populace.

With over 70% of Lagos being water, initiatives like SwimLagos Academy are crucial in
encouraging more Lagosians to embrace swimming.

Among the attendees was 12-year-old Olanna Onyejianya, a student at Meadow Hall
School. She expressed her belief that the academy would provide them with opportunities to learn new tricks, techniques, and prepare for competitions.

Todun Ibidapo, a 15-year-old student from Edgewood College, called on the government to show more support for sports, especially swimming, by upgrading and making facilities more accessible to young swimmers.

The launch of the SwimLagos Academy marks a significant step forward in promoting
swimming in Lagos. By providing high-quality instruction and creating a nurturing
environment, the academy aims to cultivate a love for swimming among individuals of all
ages and skill levels.

The support of the Lagos State Sports Commission and the enthusiasm of the young
attendees bode well for the future of swimming in the region.
