He declared, “So far, so good. I’ve been the sports commissioner in Imo State for barely two years now. Within that period, we’ve seen a lot of improvements in the sports sector since I came in.
“We’ve achieved so much since I came in as the commissioner, especially with grassroots football. We have an under-13 competition that we started last year, during which we discovered a lot of talents.
“We tagged it catch them young, and most of them were discovered from secondary schools. They are now doing very, very well.”
The amiable commissioner also provided details of his football initiative, which has led to the establishment of junior squads for the state-owned clubs in both the male and female national leagues.
“We were able to spot 65 talented players, who I am 100% sure that, in the next five/six years, will form a strong state team. We also have some coaches who are fully employed under the Ministry of Sports to discover talents.
“When I came into office, I saw the state club, Heartland, had a B-squad called Feeder Team; but I decided to start an under-15 side as well, which we call Comets.
“They are a bunch of young talented players, and they are doing very well. One of them has been invited to the national under-20 camp. The junior women’s team also has four players in the female national camp,” Onyeocha submitted.
