George Ilenikhena has rewritten Nigerian football history after sealing a blockbuster transfer to Saudi Arabian giants Al-Ittihad, becoming the most expensive Nigerian teenager ever.
The 19-year-old forward completed a reported €30 million move from AS Monaco, eclipsing the long-standing record held by John Mikel Obi, whose €20 million switch from Lyn to Chelsea in the 2006/07 season stood for nearly two decades. The deal also places Ilenikhena ahead of recent high-profile teenage transfers, including Honest Ahanor’s €17 million move to Atalanta during the 2025/26 campaign, according to figures from Transfermarkt.

Monaco confirmed the striker’s departure on Tuesday, paying tribute to his contribution during a short but impactful spell at the club. Ilenikhena joined the Ligue 1 side in the summer of 2024 and went on to make 51 appearances, scoring 10 goals and registering two assists.
“The club thanks George for his commitment and wishes him every success in the next chapter of his career,” Monaco said in a statement.
Ilenikhena’s rise through European football has been rapid and deliberate. Prior to his Monaco move, he joined the club from Belgian champions Royal Antwerp for €18.75 million, a transfer that had already positioned him among Nigeria’s most valuable teenage exports.
With the Al-Ittihad deal, he now leads an elite list of Nigerian players who secured major transfers before the age of 20, including Ademola Lookman, Ahmed Musa, Suleman Sani, Uchenna Ogundu and Akinkunmi Amoo. In contrast, established stars such as Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho completed their landmark moves after turning 20, excluding them from teenage transfer rankings.
Born in Lagos, Ilenikhena moved to France at the age of three, beginning his football development at Antony Football Evolution before progressing to Amiens ahead of the 2021/22 season. He made his senior debut in November 2022 in the Coupe de France, earned a transfer to Royal Antwerp in June 2023, and joined Monaco a year later.
On the European stage, his reputation has continued to soar. On January 21, 2026, Ilenikhena surpassed Nwankwo Kanu to become the youngest African player to reach 15 UEFA Champions League appearances, achieving the feat at 19 years and 157 days. He had earlier announced himself with authority by scoring a dramatic late winner against Barcelona in December 2023.
Beyond setting a new benchmark for Nigerian teenage transfers, Ilenikhena’s €30 million move also places him fifth on the list of the most expensive Nigerian players of all time, trailing only Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi.
At just 19, the Al-Ittihad transfer represents not just a personal milestone, but another strong statement about Nigeria’s enduring production line of elite football talent.
