Aiyegbeni’s winning mark not only secured the gold medal but also showcased his composure under pressure in a tightly contested final.

The Lagos athlete held off fierce competition from Bayelsa’s Edatomola Psalm Lebi, who earned silver with a throw of 41.52m, and Delta State’s Baba Ibrahim, who came heartbreakingly close to second place with a 41.45m effort — just seven centimetres short.

Speaking after his triumph, Michael Aiyegbeni expressed pride in delivering for Lagos. “I’ve worked hard for this moment, and to come out on top for my state means everything to me. It was a tough field, but I stayed focused.”

The hammer throw final turned out to be one of the most gripping contests of the athletics schedule, with just over a metre separating all three medalists.

For Edatomola and Ibrahim, their performances also highlighted the depth of talent in the event, giving fans an exciting glimpse into the future of Nigeria’s field events.

With his victory, Aiyegbeni adds another medal to Lagos State’s tally at the festival, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a powerhouse in athletics.
