The journey from the United States of America to Lagos proved worthwhile for the former sprint sensation, who painfully missed the opportunity to participate in the Montreal ’76 Olympics.

Bazunu’s rise to prominence began in the late sixties and early seventies when he emerged as one of the most talented schoolboys sprinters, displaying his fleet-footed prowess in dominating relays. His exceptional performance at the All Africa Games in Lagos, 1973, set the stage for what was supposed to be his crowning glory and a memorable sprint career at the Montreal Olympics in 1976.

However, the Federal Government’s anti-apartheid policy during the seventies disrupted these dreams, leading to the withdrawal of the Nigerian contingent from the Athletes Village and their subsequent return home.

This decision dashed Bazunu’s hopes of competing on the grand stage and representing his nation on the Olympic platform.

Now, 47 years later, the efforts of former Green Eagles Captain, Segun Odegbami, and the generous sponsorship of Chief Allen Onyema’s Air Peace have finally culminated in an overdue recognition and well-deserved rewards for these selfless sports pioneers.

Bazunu and other athletes who made sacrifices for the greater good of the nation are being honored with induction into the Wall of Fame, alongside various monetary benefits.

The momentous event celebrated the legacy and resilience of these national heroes, who persevered through challenges and setbacks in their quest for sporting glory.

The long-overdue recognition signifies the nation’s gratitude and appreciation for their dedication to the sport and their contributions to the nation’s sporting history.

The induction into the Wall of Fame represents a poignant tribute, preserving their names and achievements for generations to come, inspiring future athletes to uphold the spirit of dedication and sacrifice for the greater good of Nigeria’s sporting aspirations.

The commemoration of Ruks Bazunu’s remarkable career and the recognition of his fellow athletes serve as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging the past while striving for a brighter future in Nigerian sports.

The historic ceremony showcased the power of unity, determination, and the profound impact that sports can have in bringing people together and promoting national pride.

As the event concluded, the nation celebrated the long-overdue honor bestowed upon its sporting heroes, cherishing their legacy and the enduring spirit that continues to inspire athletes and sports enthusiasts throughout Nigeria
