HFN Intensifies Anti-Doping Drive With High-Impact Education Session for Premier League Teams

The Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) has taken a major step in strengthening its anti-doping framework after the Medical and Anti-Doping Commission held a comprehensive Education and Awareness Interactive Session for teams competing in the Ardova Handball Premier League Phase 2.

The session, held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Institute of Sports, Surulere, Lagos, brought together coaches, technical officials, and players as part of HFN’s renewed commitment to athlete welfare and clean sport.

The programme’s resource person, Dr. Adebukola Bojuwoye, Director of the Sports Medicine Directorate of the Lagos State Sports Commission and member of the Nigeria Olympic Committee’s Medical & Scientific Commission, delivered a detailed presentation on the dangers of doping, safe use of medication, and modern athlete recovery techniques.

Dr. Bojuwoye cautioned athletes against the casual use of medication, stressing that many compromise their health out of ignorance or poor guidance.

“There is absolutely no need to take paracetamol if you are not in pain. Training, proper loading, and rest should handle discomfort. Medication must never be the first resort,” he warned.

He also emphasized the importance of non-pharmacological recovery methods such as ice baths and massages, while advising that any necessary medication must be prescribed by qualified medical personnel.

Addressing performance-enhancing substances, he delivered a firm warning on opioids—particularly tramadol—describing them as both a sports threat and a growing national concern.

HFN President Mr. Jibril Saidu Ojih (FNSQS), who attended the session alongside federation board members and Secretary-General Mrs. Monica Otumala, praised the depth of the engagement. He requested that a formal list of prohibited substances be issued to guide teams and prevent inadvertent violations.

In response, Dr. Bojuwoye confirmed he would produce a comprehensive list of banned substances for distribution to all clubs and publication on the HFN website. He urged athletes to take personal responsibility when using any medication, noting that ignorance is not a valid defence in anti-doping cases.

Mr. Jibril further announced a key policy shift, revealing that health insurance will become mandatory for all registered league players beginning next season, stressing the federation’s obligation to protect its athletes.

“Our players are valuable assets. We must ensure they are well cared for, especially when they suffer injuries,” he said.

The session received strong commendation from participants and is regarded as a significant milestone in HFN’s efforts to strengthen integrity, enhance athlete education, and foster a cleaner sporting environment within Nigerian handball
