HFN Confirms Umuahia As Host for 2025 National Division One League, Sets August 7 Kickoff

The Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) has officially confirmed Umuahia, Abia State, as the host city for the 2025 edition of the National Division One League, scheduled to run from August 7th to 18th.

According to a statement signed by the federation’s Secretary General, Mrs. Monica Otumala, the championship — which serves as a gateway to the elite Ardova Handball Premier League — will begin with a technical meeting on August 7th, while matches will commence the following day.

Otumala emphasized the importance of timely registration, advising participating teams to complete all documentation ahead of the deadline. “All documentary registration of players must be completed on or before July 31st, 2025, while definitive registration should be submitted to HFN on or before the technical meeting,” she stated.

The Division One League is the second-tier competition in Nigerian handball and is a key platform for emerging clubs aspiring for top-flight status. Four teams — two male and two female — will earn promotion into the Ardova Handball Premier League at the end of the tournament.

Last season’s champions, COAS Shooters and Soof Omo Ogiefo, who secured promotion after excelling in the 2024 edition, are already making their mark in the premier division, underlining the competitiveness and developmental value of the league.

With Umuahia preparing to host teams and fans from across the country, anticipation is high as the city readies itself for 12 days of intense handball action.
