Godson Brume, the star athlete who emerged victorious at the maiden edition of the
Government College Ughelli (GCU) Relays, has earned a direct qualification to the 2023
World Athletics Championship in Budapest.
Godson Brume exceptional performance in the sprint trials held in Austin, Texas, saw him clocking a time under 10.00 seconds, securing his automatic spot alongside fellow Nigerian athlete, Favour Ashe.
The GCU Relays, which takes place annually at the School Tartan Tracks, generously built
and donated by the NNPC/SHELL Petroleum Development Company, has experienced
remarkable growth since its inaugural edition over five years ago.
This event, an initiative of the Old Boys Association, Worldwide, has become a significant platform for showcasing athletic talent. Before embarking on a scholarship to the United States a few years ago, Brume had already left an indelible mark on the GCU Tracks, swiftly transitioning from the National Junior Athletics Team to the Senior Squad with commendable achievements.
The GCU Relays owes its success to the unwavering support of prominent Old Boys and
organizations that prioritize the development of school sports. The GAMSU (Gamaliel and
Susan Onosode) Foundation has played a pivotal role in sustaining this event.
The annual GCU Relays, conceptualized by the GCUOBA Worldwide, aims to revive the
intense intercollegiate rivalries among legacy schools throughout Nigeria. This strategic
initiative seeks to foster healthy competition and camaraderie among the participating
institutions.
