Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq today reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports development by honouring athletes who represented the state at the just-concluded National Sports Festival, OGUN 2024, in Abeokuta.
In a ceremony held in Ilorin, the governor announced cash rewards for medal-winning athletes as a token of appreciation for their outstanding performances at the festival. Gold medalists were awarded ₦1 million each, silver medalists received ₦500,000, while bronze medalists were given ₦300,000.

Team Kwara secured a total of 29 medals—6 gold, 11 silver, and 12 bronze—to finish 14th on the overall medals table, a notable improvement that drew praise from the state’s chief executive.
“This gesture is to commend your hard work, discipline, and dedication. You have made Kwara proud, and we will continue to support you to achieve more,” Governor AbdulRazaq said.
Beyond the athletes’ rewards, the governor also approved and paid outstanding entitlements amounting to ₦201 million to former players of Kwara United Football Club. The payment, long overdue, covers arrears that had accumulated over several years and was seen as a landmark move to restore the dignity of sports veterans in the state.
Sports stakeholders have commended the governor’s intervention, describing it as a morale booster and a step in the right direction toward building a stronger sporting future in Kwara.
With these actions, Governor AbdulRazaq continues to solidify his administration’s legacy of prioritizing youth development and sports infrastructure, while also addressing past neglect in the sector
