Former Olympic Games wrestling champion, Daniel Igali has expressd satisfaction with Nigeria’s haul of gold medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with a declaration that he was truly excited seeing the contingent clinch its 10th winning fest on Saturday.
Sports247 reports that victory for Samuel Ogazi in the men’s 400m took Team Nigeria’s haul to ten gold medals and kept them high in sixth position on the overall table, which Igali described as very commendable.
Igali further praised the entire contingent’s performance and urged all Nigerians to celebrate their achievements, especially as the country’s projections had been limited by the absence of wrestling among events being contested at the ongoing Games.
While affirming this year’s outing at the Commonwealth Games as an achievement worthy of celebration, Igali philosophised that every medal represents years of dedication, sacrifice and relentless hard work by each athlete before heading into a major competition.
“The first thing I want to say is congratulations. Every one of those medals represents years of unseen sacrifice by athletes, coaches and support staff. We celebrate the few minutes on the podium, but we often forget the thousands of hours that made those moments possible.
“As someone who has stood on that podium, I know that, before every medal, there are years when nobody is clapping. That is why every Nigerian athlete wearing our colours already deserves our respect. The medals are simply the part of it the world gets to see,” Igali submitted.
Sports247 reports further that the former president of Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) also urged everyone acoss the country to continue supporting the nation’s athletes, regardless of which medals they win, stressing that all competitors deserve recognition for the sacrifices they make.
